Self-Calming Strategies for Your Child
Can self-calming strategies help children with a variety of diagnoses, including ADHD and oppositional-defiant disorder?
In clinical studies reported in the Wall Street Journal, "complementary" medicine focuses on how to help children cope and block externalcommotion. The Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota has one of the largest complementary medicine programs, and developed a Comfort Kit to teach coping skills. For example, sharing feelings and experiences through writing, talking or drawing, can help kids feel better. Smelling oils from plants like peppermint can boost energy or relax. Slow breathing by focusing on the belly's rise and fall can help control reaction to anxiety and pain. Staying active through yoga and other activity can reduce fatigue and increase energy.

Watching your child develop is always a special experience. However, ther are certain moments in your child s life whos poignancy can bring a tear to your eye and touch your heart forever. These moments come like a sudden ray of sunshine on a cloudy drizzly day.
You can capture these moments by recording them so that they can be cherished and shared with others. When a stormy day comes around and tests your strength, you'll be able to read about and look back upon that ray of sunshine. It will warm your soul and give you encouragement as you tend to your child's needs through the labor of love.
